The Healthcare Laboratory Workforce Initiative (HLWI), led by the Hospital Council, has released the results of its Survey of California Licensed Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) license holders. This is the first survey of licensed MLTs to be conducted in the state.

Earlier this year the HLWI surveyed 100 California MLT license holders in order to obtain current information about the job market for MLTs and their perception of how well they are accepted in the workplace. Fifty-two MLTs responded to the survey, providing us with a snapshot of the current marketplace for this new profession.

The survey found that:

• California licensed MLTs are employed and predominantly working in large laboratories
• Salaries for MLTs are in the mid-level range
• MLTs have a strong interest in becoming licensed clinical laboratory scientists (CLS)
• However, when asked to name their challenges, MLTs shared that:
  • They lack visibility in the workplace and acceptance by CLSs
  • The MLT scope of practice was a barrier to job satisfaction and a disincentive for job seekers from out-of-state
  • Job openings continue to be scarce, as many hospitals are just beginning to integrate MLTs into their laboratory workforce

Understanding the current issues and opportunities for MLTs will help the HLWI as we continue to seek solutions to California’s laboratory workforce shortage.
