Bay Area Patient Safety Collaborative (BAPSC)

The Bay Area Patient Safety Collaborative is a new forum for hospitals in Alameda, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties, collaborating in promotion and implementation of practices to improve patient safety.

The Bay Area Patient Safety Collaborative has an initial goal of supporting hospitals in implementing the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s 100K Lives Campaign interventions.  Through the Collaborative, hospitals enrolled in the Campaign will have access to expert faculty and resources and will participate in a peer-to-peer learning community with other hospital executives and managers with responsibility for patient safety.  Key participants from each hospital include Patient Safety/Quality Executives, the Chief Nursing Executive, the Chief Medical Officer, and when appropriate, the Chief Executive Officer.  While the initial focus of the Collaborative during the next 18 months is implementation of the 100K Lives Campaign interventions, the long-term vision is for the Collaborative to continue beyond the Campaign and to promote patient safety through pursuing other improvement initiatives for patient safety and quality of care.

Major activities of the Bay Area Patient Safety Collaborative will include:

·         Quarterly in-person educational programs and peer-to-peer learning

·         Monthly conference calls

·         Monthly newsletter

·         List serve for participants

·         Tools, resources, and expert IHI faculty for the 100K Lives Campaign

·         Evaluation of the Collaborative and identification of future areas for focus

The Collaborative is coordinated through the Hospital Council of Northern and Central California through funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (GBMF).  The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), a Cambridge, MA-based nonprofit focused on healthcare quality, is partnering with the Hospital Council to support participating hospitals in implementing IHI’s 100K Lives Campaign interventions.  The Collaborative will be coordinated by a project manager and Bruce Spurlock, M.D., a clinical consultant.  Hospitals receiving grants from the GBMF San Francisco Bay Area Challenge Grant Program are required to participate in the Collaborative.
